Introduction

Pipe smoking is the practice of tasting the smoke produced by burning a substance, most commonly tobacco, in a pipe. It is the oldest traditional form of smoking.

History

Smoking has been practiced in one form or another since ancient times. Tobacco was smoked all over as early as 5000 BC in shamanistic rituals and originated in the Peruvian and Ecuadorian Andes. Many ancient civilizations, such as the Babylonians, Indians and Chinese, burnt incense as a part of religious rituals, as did the Israelites and the later Catholic and Orthodox Christian churches.

The Art of Pipe Smoking

Albert Einstein once remarked that pipe smoking “contributed to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs.” Whether the observation is true or not, pipe smoking has had many other famous devotees, among them Franklin D. Roosevelt, Mark Twain, and the fictional Sherlock Holmes, who often disappeared into a haze of pipe smoke while solving his cases.

Pipe in Modern Days

Pipes were/are typically smoked by wealthy, upper class men. Almost all scientific and philosophical thinkers of the 18th-19th centuries were also wealthy upper class men.

Today, pipes are still a symbol of leisurely sophistication. The lengthy rituals of pipe smoking add to that aura: choosing from a variety of pipes and tobaccos, cleaning and loading the briar, puffing and tamping, then sitting in a fragrant swirl of smoke and contemplating life.

The Pipe – Targaryen Dragon

The last surviving Dragons in the world were possessed by House Targaryen, who used them to conquer and unify the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros three hundred years before the War of the Five Kings. Most of the Targaryen dragons died in the Dance of the Dragons about a century and a half later, and after that, the only dragons the Targaryens had grew little bigger then cats. Soon after the civil war the last Targaryen Dragons died, after which the species was considered to be extinct throughout the world.
